Fascinating Reading (Rating 5 of 5)
What I find fascinating is the psychology of the marines on the frontline: on the one hand they are cavalier about the dangers while on the other they are deeply pensive about the grim statistics in facing an unpredictable enemy feverishly loyal to the empire. The close-up action of war is spine tingling, both for its heroics and horror.

A Good Read (Rating 4 of 5)
Vol II: War & The Home Front is a fictional piece on the war effort at home and South Pacific combat in World War II. It focuses on the influence of war — together with supportive families — on young people abruptly maturing.
In addition, the novel dramatizes horrific, heroic and psychological drama of men on the front lines.
The backdrop of the home front, is united activity in behalf of the nation and loved ones overseas. The forefront explores the beauty and anxiety war plays with respect to love, faith and loyalty.

Grim Reality (Rating 4 of 5)
I can’t recall my father talking about his war experience other than in lighthearted reference to the rigors of boot camp: when I was about twelve he showed me once how to make my bed with hospital corners and tight-tucking of the blankets and then bounced a quarter off it. "In boot camp if a dime didn’t bounce off the bunk you had to sleep with your rifle." He smiled and added, "Maybe I should make you sleep with your guitar."
In reading part two of this novel, A Tale of Love & War: War and the Home Front, I gained some grim insight into what combat must’ve been like for him and all those other heroes he describes on the front lines, and also the devastation of the Navy from Kamikazes at Okinawa. I have to confess that I skipped over what I call "chick" stuff on the home front, yet my girlfriend love those parts.
Volume one: …Odyssey of Childhood and Early Youth, held my interest because I got an idea of what my father’s childhood was like and in general the tough times of the Depression where kids had to pinch pennies — in contrast to today’s comparative affluence. I am glad he wrote this mammoth work.

Close up Action (Rating 5 of 5)
This second volume portrays some close-up gutsy battle scenes without the usual ham often depicted in other war stories. For instance:
“Tennessee looked over at Dagwood threateningly. ‘You go an’join LI and Dig, pronto and on your own steam. I ain’t draggin’ ya no more, boy.’ He held his huge fist up to the distraught marine. Dagwood scrambled out of the shell hole and darted toward the rest of his team. Tennessee looked ahead to his left and saw Chic snaking toward a shell hole and drop himself into it. ‘What’s the matter, Chic—you hit or sumptin?’ Chic shook his head, got up on his knees, fumbling for his fly. ‘Lucifer, what a time to take a piss!’ Tennessee yelped as he jumped up and joined his team at the brush-line.
The marines 81 mm Mortars checker-boarded the hillside, but the snipers kept firing away but only sporadically. A ‘corpsman’ call could be heard echoing down the line.”
