This is a beautiful story - the best romance ever written. But don't let that put you off - Jane Eyre is as passionate and wilful a character as you could ever wish for. Written in the first-person, Jane Eyre is both compelling and exciting. You haven't truly read anything if you haven't read this!
This is a fast-paced story (not as wordy as people are inclined to believe), which is impossible to put down after you have begun to read it! This edition of the book is a comfortable book to read, with reasonably big type, although it makes the book fatter. The cover is in a very romantic style, which may not suit everybody, but I would definately reccomend the layout inside. There isn't a 'dictionary' at the back with difficult to understand words or phrases that are no longer in use, which might be a good idea for younger readers, but I'm definately a younger reader, and yet I'm finding it perfectly easy to understand!
If you haven't read this, then buy it NOW and read it. Oh, and buy it for everyone else you know
Classic gothic romance (Rating 4 of 5)
» Roman Clodia
Told in the first person by Jane herself, this is the classic Victorian melodrama raised to art. Orphaned and an outsider from childhood, Jane has no-one to rely on but herself, until she takes on the role of governess at forbidding Thornfield Hall and meets the dark, masterful and enigmatic Mr Rochester. Teased and tormented by his vacillating relationships with both her and the beautiful Blanche, she eventually wins both his love and agrees to marry him - before being stopped at the very altar by the revelation of the spectre in the attic: his mad first wife. How Jane leaves to build another life for herself, before eventually being drawn back to Thornfield, I'll leave you to find out for yourself, but once you start this novel I defy anyone to stop!
At the time, Charlotte was reluctant to reveal herself as author of this book and masqueraded under a male name, but the debate over whether this is a feminist novel depicting a woman's struggle for self-sufficiency and a kind of equality in a man's world, or a cop-out romantic female fantasy is still open. Read it and make up your own mind
